Are the bits in each state of a LFSR that's used to calculate the feedback-bit.
The choice of tap sequence determines the periodicity for a LFSR and some choices do not give a maximal-period.
The tap-sequence directly defines the linear feedback function. For example [see page 12, here] the first and last bits are the tap-sequence.
