Seperate the knowledge of a system (in the form of rules), from the reasoning component.
Expert a systems are an application of strong AI.
An example of a strong AI system is DENDRAL, an AI to determine the underlying structure of a molecule from some experimental data on it. Knowledge of the common substructures a molecule may have greatly reduced the search space of possible structures, improving the complexity of the search problem.
